GENERAL
INFORMATION:
Just upstream from it’s sister lodge, Kau Tapen, near
the Chilean/Argentine border, perched high on a bluff
overlooking the upper Rio Grande is Toon Ken. Established
in 1997, this lodge accesses the river where the grade
is steeper and long riffles transform into prime shadowed
pools and undercut banks classic holding water for the
massive Rio Grande sea run brown trout. Toon
Ken serves the middle region of the worldfamous Rio
Grande, covering 17 km with access to both banks of
the river.
The record was a 30-pound magnificent sea run brown.
In a day of fishing this river it is normal to take
many fish per angler, with an average weight of 11 pounds.
Toon Ken water has the characteristics of a smaller
river. The wading here is easy with the river’s grade
is still gentle. This creates a narrower river with
more consistent current in the pools. Seasonally, anglers
should come prepared with sinking and floating lines
and expect to use each during the stay. Sea run trout
are a mood-driven fish and in a day one may find themselves
dredging the belly of pools in the morning for holding
fish and later swinging leaches in the riffles to moving
fish as the sun sets over the horizon.
On Toon Ken water both two-handed and single-handed
rods work well. While many anglers are more comfortable
throwing a “single” rod with heavy sinking lines, which
works well here, the wind can always be a factor in
Tierra del Fuego and for these days, a 12- to 14-ft,
8- or 9-weight two-handed Spey rod is an excellent choice
for punching out line.
Anglers should note that even if they have never thrown
a two-handed rod, we encourage you to give it a try.
The learning curve is steep and many anglers will pick
it up in a session or two. Additionally, the guides
are excellent instructors and will have you on your
way promptly. With the length of these rods and the
power, anglers can throw an exceptional amount of line
in virtually any conditions and easily mend the line
which is key to the “down and across swing” method of
fishing which is most productive in Tierra del Fuego.

private bedrooms with en suite bath rooms complemented
by a lodge Jacuzzi and dry sauna. The cathedral ceiling
living room and dining room adjoin the protected Asado
porch and open pit grill offering a view of the Rio
Grande and the Andes Mountains which is second to none.
This lodge was constructed to focus on the privacy and
comfort of the angler and to respect the unblemished
characteristics of the surrounding landscape. At Toon
Ken, the culinary experience and fine wines are as unique
and exclusive as the river before you. Be it a traditional
Argentine Asado (a barbeque) with dulce de leche mousse
for dessert or another culinary marvel from Argentina
and around the globe, the professional Toon Ken staff

Fly Fishing tackle and
Equipment:
Wading
All of our fishing is in rivers and streams, wading
from the coast. One pair of fly weight chest waders
and one pair of neoprene chest waders is recommended.
The new waders "non-condensation" is the best for walking.
The comfort of your wading shoes is very important also.
Rods
Bring 2-3 rods. A good combination is:
-- 12-14; 8/9 weight spey rod.
-- 9-91/2; 7/8 weight single handed rod.
Lines
We suggest:
--Floating lines for each rod.
--Sink tip lines 7-9. (like Scientific Angler Ultra
2 wet tip IV 10 or Tenny Nymph Tip)
--Shooting head sink tip line 7-9 weight (Teeny T200
or T300 or shooting line sink V).
--Optional: Intermediate sinking line. Baking 75-100
yards is sufficient.
Leaders
From 4 to 12 feet long. Tippet material is extremely
important in Argentina. The trout are very strong and
powerful. Your tippet material should be sheer resistant
as well as have the maximum breaking strength in small
daymeters.
